With the Playstation 5 at the end of 2020, it is only a matter of time before the fans do not see what it looks like. But in the meantime, a new patent suggests what could be in reserve for its future controller design - perhaps the dualshock 5.
Polygon displayed the first details on the controller, as well as an image taken from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), where the patent was filed earlier this week on December 26. This suggests that the next Dualshock could get additional features.
At first glance, the new controller has the same construction as the dualshock 4. It would make sense, because the PlayStation 4 owners are very satisfied with its performance. (This is also a huge leap forward with respect to Dualshock 3 and its tenacious triggers.)
But, looking closer, there are extra buttons on the back of the controller. These seem to be programmable, a functionality we have seen on other third-party PS4 controllers, including those manufactured by Astro Gaming (C40 TR) and Scuf Gaming.
This does not mean that this design is definitive. The buttons WORD move elsewhere on the controller once everything is set, based on the patent notes.
An interesting thing to emphasize is that Polygon said that the controller layout shows a micro-USB port at the top. This is what the Dualshock 4 is currently using to connect to the PlayStation 4. It is said that the PlayStation 5 controller will use a USB-C port, which means that this patent could show a redesign of the current model instead.
Sony noted that he was trying to improve the features of Dualshock 4, based on a new set of rear button attachments that should arrive on store shelves early next year.
