Die PlayStation (jap. プレイステーション, Pureisutēshon, offizielle Abkürzung: PS, Codename: PSX, auch PS1 genannt) ist eine stationäre Spielkonsole des japanischen Unternehmens Sony, die am 3. Dezember 1994 erstmals in Japan verkauft und deren Herstellung nach zwölf Jahren Verkaufszeitraum, im Jahr 2006, endgültig eingestellt wurde. Die PlayStation ist die erste Spielkonsole der PlayStation-Marke. Mit Ken Kutaragi als Vorsitzendem der eigens dafür gegründeten Tochtergesellschaft Sony Computer Entertainment avancierte die PlayStation zu einer der erfolgreichsten Spielkonsolen aller Zeiten (102,5 Millionen verkaufte Exemplare weltweit) und stürzte im Bereich Heimkonsolen den einstigen Marktführer Nintendo vom Thron.
